No rights - George Carlin
Guys check out this video, George Carlin's ingeniously and with a dose of humor criticizes our "right" for human rights and a lot more...

I saw this article in the New York Times international section. It's amazing that this is still practiced today. It is definitely an ethical issue. Pay close attention to the picture of the accused, how he seeks comfort from his executioner and in an ironic twist of fate the executioner offers him some...just before he carries out his "DUTY". What are your thoughts?

Fernando:

The Button, Button story is interesting and I wouldn't entertain the thought of causing someone's death for financial gain. However,
it doesn't surprise me that many people would push the button without hesitation for the money. It's even more troublesome to know
that there are people who would perhaps press the button just for the fun of it or sadly, no reason at all.

I agree. It's scary to think how many people might actually go through with the act because it is essentially murder and the "out of sight out of mind" rule definitely DOES NOT apply here. I believe that to even entertain the thought for any length of time can be considered morally wrong. It's a great story however and interesting to see how relevant it is today.

I remember this song from the 80's.....group leader Curt Smith said it best when he described the song by saying
"The concept is quite serious – it's about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery it causes." Kind of difficult to apply ethics and virtues to
people who desire to rule the world......

Yeah it is a great song. The over all "tone" of it sounds so melodic and "accessible" but the underlying theme is one of power and control, a Hobbesean point of view for sure.
Thanks for checking out the posts Fernando! Cool comments. See ya in class!

From Joe:

I always liked this song but not until now did I realize that the lyrics could be applied to an ethical perspective, at times even a Hobbesian perspective. Listen to the lyrics and you make the call. What are your thoughts?

This is a story by Richard Matheson. He used to write alongside Rod Serling for the "Twilight Zone". Great writer. This story is called "Button, Button" and it directly deals with an issue of morality. It's a quick read. Check it out. What are your thoughts? What would you do if faced with this type of situation?
